NFRDI to Establish National Center in Southern Philippines
February 08, 2018. Dapitan City. The NFRDI has embarked on yet another milestone project which is the establishment of the National Brackishwater Fisheries Research and Development Center in Dapitan City. The Local Government of Dapitan through Hon. Rosalina G. Jalosjos, City Mayor, readily extended its helping hand towards this endeavor and cited that this would significantly enhance R&D efforts in the South. And in order to institutionalize their efforts, NFRDI and LGU- Dapitan forged a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to facilitate seamless transition of the Center from Lanao del Norte to Dapitan City. Hon. Jalosjos ensured that the LGU-Dapitan shall assist in facilitating training and extension activities specifically on livelihood training to fisherfolk in the Southern Philippines. Moreover, LGU- Dapitan shall also assist the NFRDI in titling of the 5-hectare land donated by BFAR Region IX.
According to Director Drusilla Esther E. Bayate, Interim Executive Director of the NFRDI and concurrently the Asst. Director for Technical Services of BFAR, the Center shall develop, verify and validate breeding and grow-out technology of brackishwater species such as finfishes, shellfish, shrimp and seaweeds to potentially improve production and livelihood support for fisheries stakeholders. Director Bayate also said that the Center shall serve as a training and extension facility in Mindanao for the transfer of matured technology developed by the NFRDI and other research institutions.
A PhP 3 Million budget for the development plan of the area has been allocated in CY 2018, which according to Dr. Ulysses Montojo, OIC of the NFRD- Policy, Planning and Information Division (NFRDI- PPID) could be bolstered in 2019 for the actual construction of NFRDI Facilities including research laboratories in the area.
